It's not a problem that I can't fix, coz' I can do it… IN DA MIXCouldn't
start this issue without expressing my deepest sadness after Barry
White's departure to what can't be nothing else than Soul Heaven…
I came to know him personaly at the beginning of the 90's while havin' an
intezrview for a mag that I was writing for at this period and I'll never
forget the Impression while seing the door leading to his room getting opened
to
me.
He was there sitting in a deep sofa, just the way I 've imagined he was,
wearing a black satin costume and welcomed me with this unique Voice. It was
hard for me to hide my emotions, meeting what to me had been a hero since I
was a
teenager. I guess this is something that he understood at the very first
minute and opened his heart instantly. Words'll never be enough for me to express
how I felt at the time, but I'll never forget this precise moment, as most of
us
here will never do, regarding a part or another of what he has left us with
his work.Barry was in his unique way the icon, and the icon was Barry.
"Let the music play…"

Dis time, disizit, as Sunslice festival in Toulon is the spot where all the
deep house fans will have 2 B during what stands as the french independance
day W.E. from 07/10 til 07/14. Any surprise to happen as last year's closing
nite under the form of that impromptu block party that gathered Kerri Chandler,
Dennis Ferrer and yours trully behind the desks + a Playin' 4 The City
saxophonist and an array of cuban percusionnists ? Dis, you're gonna know
within a week with the next mailing of In Da Mix.
Not necessary evident 2 have a clear view about what's not 2 B missed from
a
week 2 another as, not only because of the amount but also and foremost the
quality seems to be definitely back dis year. And there's obviously a bit of
everything 4 everyone as demonstrates this week's column. Surely good 4 our
ears although that might B anotha story 4 our finances…
Next summer (2004) sees the celebration of the 200th birthday of Haiti's
Independance. Meanwhile, Jephté Guillaume, one of its most brilliant
ambassador gives us the insane "The Kid From Okap", an atmospheric
vibrant midtempo
directing a jazzy flute riff around a phat bassline and a central question :
"Pouki ?" ("Pourquoi ?") do we suffer so ? (Spiritual Life).
Not to be missed is
the fourth release of DC label, Sancsoul an EP entitled "" which sees
the
collaborations between Brett Dancer & SoulMecca featuring Thi-Lai, althought
the best cut being "Keep It Together", a sort of afro blues song by
Curtis Lee
featuring Okbar. Also from Washington are 95 North, a pair of people that, like
Larry
Heard, thought one time about quiting their jobs in the circuit. Would have
been a shame as demonstrates their moody "Chasing My Dreams" featuring
the
vocal talents of Marie Tweek from The Rurals. A compact soulful choon although
embellished with some ambient synth line and a look like Ibañez guitar
part.
The other choice of this 3 tracks EP being their Guitar Dub Mix on some kind
of
West Indies rhythm line as championed by DJ Gregory (Large). On the same label
is
Roy Davies Jr's nu single. A nearly brazilian smoothie on some silky vocals
by newcomer Samantha Rose after a percussive start that sounds a bit like a
reminder of the classic "Jacob's Ladder" from Incognito after its
memorable
treatment by MAW ! Also worth to check out is the aerial Chicago Dub on da
flip !
In search for some bossa ? Get a listen to the easy going "When The Rain
Begins To Fall" that sees italian outfit LTJ-Experience joining forces
with
Salsoul veteran Joe Bataan (Irma). Meanwhile dAN Mela & Louie B, aka
Streetvibes, deliver us the afro caribbean "Summer At Suda" (Streetvibes).
Chari Chari
givin' its money back to Frankie Valentine while revamping in a very moody
way its afro rocky "Moog Rock" as originally released last year on
Sunshine
Entreprises. This added to a softer version of "Frankie In Vienna"
by the
man himself and a strange rework of "O'Chant" by electro anarchist
Patrick Pulsinger.
On a more classic 4X4 format is the return of Distant Music maestro Jon
Cutlerwith the groovy and classy "Focus" sung by brit soul songstress
Vanessa
Freeman, a future and obvious timeless classic. Mind ya headz and ya
buddies, as JoVonn will not only opens the Sunslice fes in Toulon but has also
some dope
new versions of the deep N soulful "Don't Waste Your Time" on Track
Mode.
Something to get you in the right mood and more particularly the Zanz
Classic Mix on the B-side. Right for the summer is the hot "Luv Me Rite"
by Todd Gardner
featuring Kimara Lovelace cleverly based on a sample of George Duke's
classic "A Brazilian Love Affair" (Distance). Could this be the return
of some true
funk vibez ? A beginning of answer is heavily given by Jestofunk on "Disco
Queen".
For da rest, that's another story that needs to be written (Irma), although
the infamous reedits of Black Science Orchestra's "New Jersey Deep"
in its
original version and by Swag tend to be a good element of response (Junior
Boys Own). Meanwhile, former BSO guy Ashley Beedle turns Mr Scruff's "Sweet
Smoke" into some shiny jazz funk story (Ninja Tune). On a harder (electronic)
tip
is The Amalgamation Of Soundz's newie. A vibrant song called "To Find A
Quiet
Space" that, together with the two others kutz on the B-side, shows us
what this
british talented pair is really made of (Atcha Recordings).
Peace,
