Subject: IN DA MIX # 11

It's not a problem that I can't fix, coz' I can do it… IN DA MIX
ISSUE∫#11

Back from Detroit and to the regular form of In Da Mix as said earlier, with
a full report about the Movement festival to be printed on next week's
issue, as I've just landed in Paris this morning. Also new partner sites to
broaden IDM's exposure are technotuner.fr, movinrecords.com and ghettotrax.com,
looking set to join the network anytime now.

Good good stuff to be released soon on Plaza Records. For those of you
who've never heard about this label, it is nothing else but the imprint of 70's
funk legend, Randy Muller, a guy who's created a sound on his own, producing
groups like Brass Construction, Skyy, Funk Deluxe, and Rafael Cameron
amongst others with a full bunch of masterpieces including "Movin'", "First Time
Around", "This Time" and "Funtown USA". Well, the good thing is that most of this
unvaluable material is to resurface with the help of Kenny Dope behind the
desks, beginning with Skyy's classic "Let's Celebrate" that he has notoriously
played during his set at the MAW party in Miami.

No news so far about a release date for the enormous "Back 2 Chicago" by Roy
Davis Jr on NiteGrooves, although we might reveal that this hudge tune is
the result of a collaboration between the aforementionned and Detroit rising
face, Malik Alston. Also on the watch this space tip, check out one half of french duet
Nutropic, Jazzamar's nu material awaited on Crammed Discs and some other labels, as
it's pure dope in its most brilliant form. And, last but not least, some
new Playin'4 The City stuff with the remixes of "Backshop EP" by Franck Roger
and Llorca awaited any day now on Tropism, + a new 12" scheduled soon on
chicagoan label Music 101 (remember where you've read it first !).

Our here & now section pushes us a bit deeper inside the Windy City with
Glenn Underground, a true Chi-lite, should he be on his own as it's the case
on Shelter with "Look Inside" (check out the Dub) or with some now usual
collaborators of his like Abicah Soul (remember their previous work entitled
"Chuckie's Turn" released both on Jellybean Soul and Rush Hour ?) ; these enlightning
his subtle mix of afro funk driven patterns and thin keys as delivered on "Esta
Hermosa Cancion" on Moods & Grooves. Not mentionning the addiction of some
poetry featuring Cei-Bei on "Fall'en Rain" (Nite Life Collective).
Let's get down, not to Saturday night, although it definitely looks like an
anthem, but to Baltimore where local heroes, Jasper Street Co deliver us the
majestikal "Another Day" remixed by Jersey supremos Blaze. An absolute
soulful craziness due to become a classic (Basement Boys Records). This leadin' us
to former Blaze collaborator, Cassio Ware, with the various declinaisons of his
newie called "'Happy Birthday Baby", including the that reminds somehow the
previous works of the guys under the name of Funky People (Black House/Funky
Soul). Keepin' on this Jersey trip with the revamping of Kenny Bobien's
classic, "Dance For Life", originally released on Soundmen On Wax two years ago.
Well, as Barry White said to me one day : "As long as the shape is here, no matter
what ! Good music stays good music". And it's definitely the case with this
package including Kenny Carpenter's typically New York stylee mix and
janaese Little Big Bee adding some latin flavas on it.

Following the footsteps of brilliant Inda Arie and Jahiem featuring Mary J
Blige's 12", off-side label Fall out as two nu corkers. The first one being
british female duet, Floetry with the jazz/funk sensuous "Say Yes". The
other one being some Timmy Regisford's reworks of "You Made Me Love You" by
Jamiroquai's singer, Jay Kay under the name of Lil' Jay, including a floorfiller dub
version. Meanhile you may get some more remixed material from this famous
british band under the form of their House Mixes Vol.1 album relased on their
recently launched label (JMR Records). A collection including amongst others the
Blaze's Shelter Mix of "Little L", "Canned Heat" by Masters At Work, "Alright" by
Todd Terry and "Space Cowboy" by David Morales.

You may already know how much we like to twist the vibez here as there's
nuttin' more borring than listening to da same kinda shit for hours & hours…
Well, this 3 Generations Walking's newie called "Midnight Bustling" gives us the
opportunity to embrace some deep afro reggae/dub territories (most
particularly the Groundation Version), as offered week by François K (although he's
remixed the other side) during his recently launched Deep Space Monday nite sessions
@ (Spiritual Life). Atmosphere, atmosphere even though much different
leadin' us to some latin jazz era with a bit of melancholic chords alla Faze Action
on "The Nature EP" from japanese producers, Katsuya Sano and Shin Ashimoto and
more precisely "River Benue (The Just For Fun Dub") remixed by Srs Jerome
Sydenham and Dennis Ferrer (Ibadan).

Dennis Ferrer does once again the do on a real soul funk trip, relifting
"Can't Stop" for Reel People featuring Angela Johnson and this gives us
another stomper (Papa Records). Anotha name definitely to watch out is T-Kolai as
their music has always had something different (what we call a trademark). Non
content to have recently created a pure piece of beauty on the downtempo
field, prior to the release of their debut-LP on ChilliFunk, the guys keep on
paving their way somewhere between Needs, Ron Trent, Joe Claussell and Glenn
Underground with the afro funky "Kenji Kuan" over some plaintive tribal vocal riffs
(Sahara). Meanwhile California beach boy Miguel Migs gives us the soulful
"The Moving On" featuring vocalist Lagerald Norman over a cool'n'groovy midempo
(Chez). Time to embark on a short trip to Europe with the latest release on Bitches
Brew. Although not an instant floorfiller, "Mistaken" has definitely more of
a timeless song and more especially on the B-side's remix from Alix Alvarez. A
classy deep house song from a production team that comprizes DJ Cosmo and
Ben Mitchell joined by singer Billie Godfrey with whom the latest has worked
with on the Mitchell & Dewbury album recently released on Mumo Records.
Anotha fruitful collaboration is this sweet & jazzy/soulful remix of "Set
For Seizure" by Anthony Nicholson for Compost's new signee Daniel Magg, givin'it
da reeal dimension. I somehow have to say that Trüby Trio's debut-LP was
something of a disappointment, goin' a bit everywhere without a real lead
apart from two to three songs. Well, we have at least one of'em : the groovy
"Satsfaction" to save the disaster as "Jaleo" on the A-side gives you a
pretty good preview of what this album is about !

Down to the South and we're In Italy, the country of respected Irma Records.
Well these Rimini people have a new bomb on offer under the form of the
brilliant "Chimes Of Freedom" seing some of the most unexpected
collaboration between the Pasta Boys and Osunlade. This one leadin'us to a magnificient
groove somehow reminiscent of some "ancient" work by Talking Headz.
Ending up this issue 11 with two french nu projects. The first being the
fluid and soulful "You Know" by co-leader of Soldiers Of Twilight, Demon
Ritchie under the guise of Herald featuring Gee (Serial Records). Mini Groove
Orchestra takin' us to some festive destination with the houselectroïd Oscar's Club
Mix of "Pom Pop" around some vocal scats (Follow Me). A real happy end
indeeeeeed ! Peace y'all !
